What is Pre-Med?

Pre-Med isn’t a major—it’s a track students follow while earning a bachelor’s degree. You complete prerequisite courses (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.), take the MCAT, and apply to medical school separately after undergrad. This is the most common path to becoming a doctor.

What is a BS/MD Program?

BS/MD programs combine a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in one continuous program. Students apply as high school seniors and, if accepted, secure a seat in medical school. Typically, 7-8 years instead of the traditional 8+ years (4 years undergrad + 4 years med school).4. Highly competitive with low acceptance rates.

Which one is right for you?

Pre-Med is the more common route—the vast majority of doctors take this path. BS/MD is rare and extremely competitive —only a small percentage of students get accepted into these highly selective programs. Pre-Med gives you flexibility—you can explore different majors and career options before committing to medicine. BS/MD offers security—you bypass the traditional medical school application process if you meet program requirements. BS/MD is relatively more cost-effective as you could save up to 2 years of tuition.
